6 Deliciously Simple Breakfast Ideas Your Family Will Love
The cold and holiday season are here! We know things are a little crazy right now, and the whole family will need to be sure to eat a full, healthy breakfast to keep up with the busy time of year.
So, we’ve outlined six nutritious and super wallet-friendly breakfast ideas to keep you and your family happy and healthy this winter.
Enjoy a berry delicious oatmeal
This is about as classically simple as it gets for breakfast. You can either microwave or boil some old-fashioned rolled oats, and then drop in a healthy dose of fresh fruit. Blueberries, strawberries, and sliced bananas are perfect for oatmeal :)
Occasionally the oatmeal can come out somewhat dry. Add a splash of milk to make this meal more deliciously edible for your kiddo. See recipe here.
Pro-tip: Too bland for your child? Mix in a scoop of peanut butter or a sprinkle of cinnamon to add some savory flavor.
Keep it simple with (healthy) cereal
This one might seem like a cop-out, but many cereals today are just as nutritious as the most elaborately prepared egg frittata.
But, be sure to take a look at the ingredients on the box before loading up your shopping cart with a month’s worth of cereal. This might mean re-thinking some of those fun, familiar favorites from your childhood...
A few things to consider when selecting cereal for your kids:
- Try to find a whole grain base (ideally the cereal will be entirely whole grain).
- Steer clear of high fructose corn syrup and limit the amount of added sugars (some of these numbers might surprise you).
- Check the sodium content, fiber intake, and serving sizes (which can be deceivingly small).
- Talk with your doctor or nutritionist for advice about food products and the best type of milk for your child.

Spread the love with peanut butter or avocado toast
Peanut butter toast: Just three ingredients are required for this simple breakfast treat: Whole grain bread; peanut butter; and a banana. Simply toast the bread, spread that peanut butter goodness on each side, and layer on those banana slices. If your kid doesn’t love bananas, you can also add blueberries or strawberries (with a pinch of cinnamon or scoop of jelly, if you like ;). See recipe here.
Avocado toast: Just three ingredients are, also, required for this tasty morning snack: Whole grain bread; avocado (or pre-made guacamole); and diced or sliced tomatoes. Simply toast the bread, spread that smooth avocado puree on the toast; and then sprinkle on the diced tomatoes (mushrooms and chives work great, too!). See recipe here.
Pro-tip: As you know, some kids can be pretty particular about how they want their bread sliced and toasted. Letting them slice the bread and spread the peanut butter on their own is a fun way to include them (and to prevent a potential meltdowns).
Serve up a smoothie
You know your kiddo best: Gather their favorite fruits and vegetables and whip them up in the blender with water or milk. We’re big fans of banana, avocado, blueberries, and a scoop of peanut butter for a tasty smoothie with awesome consistency. See recipe here.
Pro-tip: Want to sweeten the smoothie with something nutritious but chocolate-y? Add a scoop of cacao powder.
Get going early with granola
Granola with yogurt is a great-tasting breakfast that’s rich in calories, protein, fiber, and micronutrients. And it’s super easy to prepare.
You can buy pre-made granola mixes at the grocery store and family variety packs of yogurt. Want to include more natural ingredients? Add in nuts, raisins, and fresh fruit to load on even more nutrition. See recipe here.
Pro-tip: Making your own granola is pretty easy and super cost-effective. And it requires just a handful of ingredients.
Bring the heat with huevos rancheros
If you live in the west, then you have no doubt experienced world-class huevos rancheros in your area. Now it’s time to bring this delicious breakfast home to your kids.
You can make huevos rancheros as spicy or mild as you like. The only required ingredients are a salsa made from tomatoes and onion; black beans with smashed garlic; one warm tortilla; and a sunny side up fried egg. See recipe here.
Pro-tip: Sprinkle on some cilantro or place some diced avocado on top of your huevos rancheros for even more flavor and health benefits.
