Friday Health Plan Perks for Babies and Moms

In honor of Baby Safety Month, Friday Health Plans is outlining all the ways your little ones are covered with Friday.

From annual well-baby exams to superb in-network OB-GYNs, every Friday Health Plan comes with benefits and services to keep you and your newborns in ship-shape. Read below to see how Friday helps you monitor your child’s health, growth, and development. Here goes.

So you’re having a baby? Time to maximize those maternity benefits

Congratulations! With so much to be excited about, Friday has you covered throughout the whole process with your doctors and delivery team. To start, be sure to pick an OB-GYN that will deliver your baby at an in-network hospital, so find a doctor here. (An OB-GYN is both an Obstetrician (OB) and Gynecologist (GYN).)

Your Friday health plan will cover the standard health tests, supplements, exams, and hospital delivery and stay. And don’t forget to give the Friday Care Crew a call when your bundle of joy arrives so they can join your Friday plan and receive all the health benefits for new babies.

Four to six weeks after having your baby, it’s recommended you visit your OB-GYN for a check-up appointment. If you have any symptoms or complications, you may need to go sooner. During this visit, your doctor will assess the health of both you and your newborn. You’ll also receive training in the best practices for breast or bottle feeding.

Know the facts about pregnancy, babies, and COVID-19

While the research on the impact that COVID-19 has on pregnancy is still ongoing, the Center for Disease Control has found that those who are pregnant may experience more complications from COVID-19 and are more likely to be hospitalized. They are also at an increased risk of preterm birth, which can result in poor pregnancy outcomes. Key takeaway: The CDC encourages that anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or thinking of becoming pregnant get vaccinated to protect themselves from COVID-19.

Concerned about COVID and your baby? Be sure to speak with your pediatrician for professional guidance.

Take advantage of the free well-baby exams and vaccines

Your baby is covered for all their well-baby visits, free to you, and includes comprehensive preventive exams, screenings, and vaccines with your in-network pediatrician.

These visits are also great because your doctor can make referrals and recommend any further tests that need to be done. These appointments are included in every Friday Health plan.

Well-baby exams include the following preventive tests and screenings:

  • Blood pressure screening
  • Medical history review
  • Height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) measurements
  • Vision screening
  • Hearing screening for all newborns
  • Behavioral assessments
  • Autism screening for children at 18 and 24 months
  • Developmental screening for children under age 3
  • Dyslipidemia screening for children at higher risk of lipid disorders
  • Hemoglobin screening

Get health insurance coverage for your baby

Depending on what state you live in, your newborn will likely be covered under your health plan for up to 30 days after your pregnancy. But starting on day 31, this extension ends and you’ll need to get coverage for your baby. You can buy a health plan for your baby either directly through a health insurance carrier like Friday Health Plans or on your state’s health exchange.

Save money with a child-only Catastrophic Plan.

A child-only health plan is a health insurance policy where no parent or guardian is covered and the policyholder is 18-years-old or younger. The child is the only one on the health plan.

Often, mom and dad are on a health plan from work that either won’t cover children or would cost a lot of money to do so. In this case, a child-only Catastrophic Plan could be a great, cost-effective health insurance solution, saving the family money and covering your newborn with a simple, useful health plan.

And with three free doctor visits each year for your baby and unlimited $0 Teladoc appointments, you’ll be getting very good value for services you know you’ll likely use.

Remember to keep up with your mental health after your baby is born

After giving birth, you’re likely to experience a whole range of powerful emotions -- everything from absolute bliss to “baby blues” when your hormones rapidly drop after delivery. This is all perfectly normal.

One out of seven women, however, will develop postpartum depression, a serious and complex mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that happen after pregnancy.  If you’ve been feeling depressed for more than two weeks after your baby is born, you may have postpartum depression. This should be taken very seriously and it’s important to get depression help.

These are some of the symptoms to be on the lookout for:

  • Being uninterested in your baby or feeling like you’re not bonding with them
  • Having a perpetually depressed mood
  • Experiencing severe anger and crankiness
  • Loss of pleasure or ability to enjoy life
  • Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and helplessness
  • Having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, that’s okay. Postpartum depression and anxiety are fairly common following pregnancy.

Mental health is an essential healthcare priority, and we cover it just like your physical health, with a network of great specialists and unlimited $0 healthcare resources.

Friday Health Plans is extremely proud to offer robust mental health benefits to new moms and all our members. If you’re experiencing symptoms following your baby’s birth, be sure to take advantage of the following:

  • All Friday members can also use Teladoc for 24/7, $0 virtual counseling sessions if they are over 18 via phone or video.
